Carnivalization of Protest

Abstract

The article provides an overview of selected studies describing the political significance of carnival aesthetics. The purpose of the article was to identify the possible consequences of carnivalization of protest such as: the usage of carnival repertoire for gathering media attention and participants mobilization, the effect of reduction of the political meaning with using the carnival tactics. According to the author, it is impossible to derive the tactics from the political meaning of social movements, hence the study of the efficacy of protest carnivalization should also consider the transformation of collective identity and goals defined by the protesters.
