The main purpose of the article is to present the influence of the counterculture on the development of the culture configuration – that means all the normative, symbolic and material elements of culture – of the Internet. The intensive development of computer technologies, including computer networks, took place in California, where counterculture had begun some time earlier. Many inventors of various new computer technologies, as well as members of the first virtual communities, were sympathizers of counterculture. One of the most important contributions of the counterculture to the culture configuration of the Internet was the idea of personal computers. On the influence of the counterculture the Internet was said to be an instrument which should provide communication freedom, free speech and creating of new communities. This way of thinking about the Internet is still partially presented but the Internet began to be used by the forces which the counterculture was afraid of. In effect the Internet became dangerous to personal freedom, dignity and privacy.
